Meet Remy Duff , Senior Detective, Major Crimes, Toronto police .... Duff is a rare and contradictory hybrid, a take-it-as-it-comes free spirit who marches to his own beat, yet enjoys working one of the most demanding jobs in policing - the Old Clothes squad. It is a largely unexplored police specialty; undercover who dress down to circulate in the city's late night bars and dives to build a network of intel sources. It's a job most coppers can't do and a lifestyle most want no part of; a topsy-turvy world spent working nights, sleeping days, and moving in often dangerous company. But Duff is a student of human nature, he likes the action, and he thrives in the role. He is the only one in his division to volunteer, so he is a squad of one. |
And nightlife is his natural habitat. The fact that he is allowed to drink beer on the job and sleep till noon are also small perks that fit nicely with his worldview. On the other hand, he has the highest C&C rate (collars and convictions) in town, not that he bothers to keep track. But perhaps what is most idiosyncratic about him is his passion, which happens to be the world of magic. He likes to call himself a Wizard-at-Large, and magic infuses his everyday life, both on the job and off. Some even believe he has psychic powers. Duff has no comment. What he certainly has is an offhanded kind of charm, a stubborn individualism, and a dogged sense of humour, all of which help him stay sane in a job with the highest burn-out rate in the business. |
