Remy Duff is a senior detective attached
to the Major Crimes Unit of the Toronto Police Force. His role is with a
largely unexplored police specialty: the Old Clothes Undercover Squad, officers
who dress in scruffy old clothes pulled from the corners of the closet. They
do so to blend into the city’s late night haunts and dives to build a network
of informant sources - human intelligence, or humint - any police force’s
most effective tool. However, it is a job most coppers can’t do, and a lifestyle most want no part of. Duff is the only one in his division to volunteer, so he is a squad of one. And he thrives in the unique role. He’s a street-smart and highly resourceful free spirit who can move comfortably in any company, dangerous or otherwise. And nightlife is his natural habitat. |
The role also affords a freedom
that no other police function does. For instance, Duff gets to sleep late
and drink beer on the job, two small perks that fit nicely with Duff's world
view. And he has the highest C&C rate on the whole force (Collars and
Convictions), so he is given much – begrudged – latitude by his superiors. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Duff’s character is his passion, which happens to be the world of magic, and magic infuses his life both on and off the job! Some even claim that he has psychic abilities. Duff isn't saying. What he certainly has is a stubborn individualism and an unshakeable sense of humor. Those, and his magic interest, help keep him sane on job with the highest burnout rate in the land. |
